Almeria’s cathedral is in the heart of the old town. This Gothic / Renaissance church has replaced the other church that got wrecked by the earthquake of 1522. The church has a fortress-like appearance due to its towers. This is because it was build during pirate times. Visit the church and its beautiful artwork inside. About 150 km / 90 miles from Almeria you will find the world famous Alhambra castle. This masterpiece of Moorish architecture is known as the best historical sight of southern Spain. The Alhambra was build by the Moorish during their occupation of the Iberian peninsula. It would have been their greatest piece of work yet. The castle is known for its beautiful artefacts, calligraphy and gardens. It is said that just the sentence “God is almighty” is displayed on the wall over 1000 times. It might take a little effort to be able to visit the Alhambra from Almeria, but it will be worth it. Prearrange this trip through an organised tour, because entrance tickets for the Alhambra often sell out weeks in advance.
