Phu My Cruise port guide: docked

To be able to make Phu My the port of call of the day, cruise ships will have to leave open sea and sail up the Sông Thị Vải river. You will find there is little but swamp, mangrove and an industrial container port in the area. Phu My is a large spread out port where there are several locations that a cruise ship can dock. Once your ship is docked you will find yourself in the middel of nowhere. Be prepared that there is nothing of interest within walking distance of the cruise ship. You will need transportation to get to places of interest.

There might be some vendors that come to the pier to sell souvenirs. Please know there is usually no tourist information, no maps and no visitors center available.

Shore Excursions at Phu My

If you book your shore excursion through the ship your bus should meet you right at the cruise dock. If you have booked a tour through an independent company you might want to verify where your meeting point is. Not all vehicles are allowed in the port area and it could also be that your driver will meet you at the exit of the port. The rule of thumb is that there is no walking allowed in the port because the cruise port is also used as an industrial port. Most likely you will need to take a shuttle bus to the exit of the port. Check this information with your cruise line so that you know what will apply to your visit in this port.

Taxi tour

There are only a number of private vehicles allowed on to the cruise pier when there is a cruise ship in port. You will find small white and grey vans on the pier that will try to get a group together for a tour. Vietnam is a bargaining country, so make sure to negotiate before you step into the taxi. Usually there are not just taxis or private tour vehicles on the cruise dock, but also at the exit of the port.

Currency Exchange

There is usually no currency exchange available on the dock unless your cruise line specifically arranged one. A lot of place take US dollar als long at the bills are nice, clean and crisp. Make sure to bring small bills because hardly any place is able to give you change. If you have more ports of call in Vietnam during your cruise than it is highly recommended to have Dong with you on your cruise. Most of the times the front office will offer a currency exchange service. You will often find a currency exchange service in one of the port of call. You can also use an ATM to get your Dong’s.
