Honningsvåg – Norway

Welcome to the Honningsvag cruise port guide. Honningsvag is a small town of 2600 inhabitants in one of the remotest corners in the world. It lies 71 degrees north on the island of Magerøya. Magerøya means “barren island” and this is exactly what it is. When you are in Honningsvag you are in the most northern part of Finnmark in the famous Lapland region. Be amazed by the landscapes you are going to encounter here. This is the land of barren coastlines with icy cold winters, the midnight sun and northern lights. Imagine you would live here in the winter time in such a small inaccessible place with a small community surrounding you. It would only be a blessing when summer time comes and even then most visitors consider the summer conditions below acceptable. You don’t choose to go to Honningsvag to enjoy the good weather. You go because you want to experience this environment. See how the Sami people live, what the wind and ice can do to a landscape and more importantly: you want to stand at the egde of the world. The North Cape is just a short ride away from the cruise port of Honningsvag and it is something you simply have to check off your travel resume. Check out our Honningsvag cruise port guide underneath for all the information on docking location and transportation options!

Cruise Port Guide Honningsvåg – Norway: docked

This is the main dock in Honningsvag although there are a couple of docks available in the near area (see map).. From here you walk past the blue building and straight onto the main parking lot where all vehicles leave for the North Cape and where you find the tourist information.

This building on the main parking lot in front of the dock is where you can arrange all kind of stuff. This is where you’ll find the tourist information, the North Cape museum, car rentals, bus stops and souvenir shops.

This is the tourist information on the parking lot. This is the spider of the web when it comes to transportation options. If you haven’t pre arranged anything make sure to walk in here to see what your options for that day are.

Reindeer on holiday.
On Magerøya it is quit hard not to spot reindeer. There about 8000 “wild” reindeer on the island that are owned by 6 different families. Each spring military vessels escort the reindeer from the mainland to Magerøya island. In the late fall the reindeer swim back to the mainland. Magerøya really is their vacation island where they get to roam free during the summer time. You can sometimes spot them in Honningsvag, but you will definitely see them on your drive to the North Cape.

In Honningsvag your cruise ship has several options to dock. All cruise docks are just a few minutes walk from the main street of Honningsvag. Although Honningsvag is a small town it still has rather good facilities for cruise passengers. Everything in town, when it comes to tourism, is basicaly arranged through the tourist information. They are the spider in the web when it comes to transportation, tours, hikes etc. You’ll find them on the parking lot in front of the cruise docks (see map).

Transportation in Honningsvag

Since Honningsvag is in such a remote area of the world transportation options are limited. Please find your options underneath:

Public bus system

Public transport is now under control of the Tourist Information. Bus 330 used to be the public bus going to the North Cape. These tickets are now sold through the tourist information. Walk into their office on the main parking lot to check the times and buy your tickets. You can also pre-book your tickets from the cruise dock to the North Cape through the following link: http://www.nordkapp.no/en/travel.

Taxis

Taxis are generally only available in the morning.  Find them in front of the dock on the main parking lot. They are willing to show you around or just to bring you to the North Cape. Negotiate a price before hand. Please know 1600 NOK is a suitable price to pay per taxi (max. 4 persons) round trip. Please know that taxis are very limited in Honningsvag.

Car Rental

There are a few car rentals in Honningsvag. Why not rent a car yourself and drive all over the island. It is a rather small island with a couple of roads. The only thing you need to do when driving on Mageroya is avoid the reindeer. You’ll find the Hertz and Avis car rental near the tourist information on the main parking lot. Since vehicles are limited we do recommend to book ahead of time by emailing post@nordkappauto.no for example.
