The port of Grundarfjörður has no dock available in port for any cruise ships to come along side. Therefore this port is a tender port. Your life boats will bring you to shore where you will arrive at a tiny pier in the center of town.
There are limited facilities at an around the cruise pier. The tourist information is just up the hill. It has lots of information for hikes and suggestions on what to see and do.
Sometimes there are some tours offered on the pier by independent operators. There is supermarket and a couple of coffee places in the town, a playground for the kids and that is just about it.
What to see and do in Grundarfjörður
In town there are little things to see and to. Grundarfjörður is a charming village, but there is nothing there that will give you a day packed with fun. Therefore to make the most out of your day we recommend you to go out of town and there are lots of ways to do that. Consider 1 of these options:
Hiking in Grundarfjörður
If you like hiking than this is the place for you. There are lots of hiking trails in the area that can take you to different viewpoints, waterfalls and beautiful Icelandic landscapes. All trails start in or around the town and there are lots of information signs and also brochures that you can pick up. Honestly, you don’t need a map to navigate yourself around the trails, so a photo of the information signs will be enough to navigate yourself around the hills of Grundarfjörður.
All walking routes are marked as either easy, easy and suitable for bicycling, or difficult.
The easier walks might also the most popular ones.
Most popular hike:
You can walk to the Kirkjufell mountain and Kistufell waterfall. This iconic photo opportunity is about 3 km walk from the tender port. It is a rather leveled walk because you stay pretty close to the shoreline.
Once you have arrived at the waterfall you can also opt to go further afield and hike up the famous Kirkjufell mountain. That will be a steep hike, but well worth the views that can catch up there.
Alternative hike:
There is also the walk to the waterfall on the other end of town which is the high one called the Grundarfoss waterfall.
For this waterfall you will turn left out of town, follow the shoreline for about 1,5 km and then turn inland when the signs tell you to.
The biggest hikers could undertake the hike towards both waterfalls, although for some that might be to much for a day. However, it is completely up to you how to spend your day ashore.
Shore excursions in Grundarfjörður
If you are not a big fan of hikes then definitely get yourself on a shore excursion. Outside of town are the best places to visit, plus you get to enjoy a great opportunity to view the Icelandic landscapes on your way to your destination.
Obviously your ship will have shore excursions for offer. On shoreside there might be some tours for offer, although this is not always the case. Therefore we recommend prebooking something to avoid disappointment.
Kirkjufell express
Sometimes in port there is a shuttle bus called the “Kirkjufell express”. This bus can take you from the cruise port to the Kirkjufell mountain (3 km down the road). If the bus is there it advertises it departs every 30 minutes and it should cost around 15 euro.

There is a small company renting out kayaks for the day so you can explore the shore lines from the kayaks. Weather permitted of course.
