Flam - Norway

National Geographic Traveler Magazine has named it one of the top 10 train journeys in Europe and Lonely Planet named it best train journey in the world in 2014. It definitely is something special, but if it really is the most beautiful train journey in the world is up to you to decide. The Flamsbana only has a single track and therefore there are only a limited amount of trains that can go up during the day. Sometimes this creates a problem in capacity. From the port there are a couple of flat, uphill, short and long hikes that you can take. Be mesmerized by beautiful views like this one. The tourist information has maps with hiking trails on them. Be sure to pick them up.

Take the 1 hour uphill walk to this waterfall. The quantity of water falling off it is impressive as well as the views you’ll have from up here over the valley. Pick up the map from the tourist information to see its location.

12 km to the north you will find Aurlandsvangen, a small town famous for its shoe making. Also the Aurland church is here. Take public transport or a taxi to Aurland.

This museum, right next to the train station in town is a great way to actually learn how and why the Flamsbana was created. For those of you not just interested in the gorgeous views from the train you can learn about the decisions and challenges the Norwegians were up against when building the Flamsbana beginning 20th century. From port it is about 300 meter walk.

This 17th century church is perfect to visit if you are looking for a flat 3,5 km walk. This walk will take you through the Flam countryside into the valley. Pick this church as your turn around point and you’ll have a wonderful walk.

Aegir Brygger is Norway’s famous craft brewery. This local establisment brews 21 different types of beers which won prizes around the world. Ægir BrewPub is located right near Flam’s cruise dock. The building is completely in Viking style and resembles a Stave Church. Inside you will find a bar where you can sit down at the fireplace and taste what our local beer brewery has to offer. For just a little under 150 kr. you will get 5 samples of some amazing beers or simply come in for lunch! Find the brewery in across Flam’s cruise dock.

If you take the Flam train to Myrdal your train will automatically stop for a short photoshop at the Kjosfossen waterfall. Watch out for the legends that hide behind the waterfall, they just might be true.

Find local food specialities at Flam’s supermarket. The area of Flam has quite some interesting and delicious local food products to offer. Visit the Coop supermarket about 200 yards from your ship to buy your local salmon, salami, goat cheese and much more. In the store, search for the “Local food” stand. Everything on it is produced in the area. Especially the brown goat cheese has a unique flavour. It is a caramelised goat cheese that is produced in the mountains about 15 km from the port. From port it is 200 meter walk.
